What is an autoresponse and why do I need it?

An autoresponse is an email that is sent out automatically when a visitor takes action on certain pages of your website. This is helpful because it allows your site visitors to receive confirmation of their signup or action taken, receive a receipt for a payment or donation, confirm their membership, and more.

Page types with an autoresponse

  • Donation

  • Signup

  • Volunteer Signup

  • Event

  • Petition

  • Feedback

Memberships

Memberships have three separate autoresponses included. Unless they are turned off, autoresponses are sent out automatically for:

  • Expiration warning

  • Failed payment

  • Membership expired

Each of these autoresponses directs the recipient to the membership renewal page so they can renew their membership, and can be edited.

Editing autoresponse text

Autoresponse emails are set up with Liquid tags to automatically pull in the recipient's information based on the email address it's being sent to. It is very important to only edit outside of these Liquid tags.

You can customize the message and add images to these emails easily by going to the page settings tab, then the Autoresponse tab (e.g. Donation settings > Autoresponse)

โš ๏ธ Please note: If you don't have experience with or understand Liquid, it is best to not edit any text within the curly brackets { } as this could cause your autoresponse to display incorrect content! โš ๏ธ

You can add images or additional text to your autoresponse as long as you are sure to not edit anything within curly brackets { }. The below example is from a Donation page:

Pro tips for using autoresponse emails

  • Customize your autoresponder emails to be authentic to your organization, and so that people feel they are hearing from you rather than an auto-generated message.

  • Add a "Hi," "Hello," or "Dear" in front of the {{recipient_first_name_or_friend}}
    โ€‹

  • Embedded content and attachments are not supported in autoresponse emails.
    โ€‹

  • The autoresponse email from the Donation page includes their payment receipt.
    โ€‹

  • Digital content can be linked within the autoresponse email if you want your visitor to take a specific action before gaining access. For example, if you'd like to share content such as an ebook or audiobook behind a petition page or donation paywall, you can place the download link in your autoresponse email so they have to pay before receiving it.
