Logging in with social login

To log into your nation using social login, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the login page: Go to your nation’s login page at [yournationslug].nationbuilder.com. You should see multiple login options.

  2. Select a social login option: Click on the relevant social login button that you prefer (e.g., "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Microsoft").

  3. Authenticate via the social provider: You will be redirected to the Google or Microsoft authentication page, where you may be prompted to log in if you aren't already.
Enter your credentials for the selected provider and grant the required permissions to link your account.

  4. Account linking (Optional): If an account already exists in the nation with the same email address as your social account, you will be prompted to link your accounts by logging in with your email address and password.

  5. Complete the login process: Once authenticated, you will be redirected back to your nation and automatically logged in.

Scenarios for using social login

First-time login using social account

If you are a new user without an existing account, using a social login for the first time will create a new user account, provided your nation allows new signups.

Linking social login with existing password account

If you already have a password-based account, you can link your social account by clicking on the social login option and using an email address matching your social account. This will make future logins faster.

The user only has a social login

It’s possible for a user to only have a social login and no email/password login. In that case, the ‘Social logins’ section will be the only one displayed in the ‘Login and security’ tab of the account settings.

Social login provider has been disabled

Any users who were previously relying upon that provider will need to create email/password credentials to log in.

Troubleshooting tips

  • Email already exists: If you see a message indicating that an account with your email already exists, it means your email is registered. You will need to link your social account to proceed.

  • Invitation expired: If you were invited by email and the invitation has expired, but the nation allows new users to sign up, you can still create an account by using social login.

  • Nation does not allow new users to sign up: If new user signups are restricted, only invited users will be able to create accounts. If your invitation has expired, you will need to request a new one.

Disabling social login for your nation

If you are an admin or have “Manage authentication” permissions, you can disable social login for your nation which removes Google and/or Microsoft login options from your nation login page. Navigate to your nation Settings > Login and Security and locate the Social Login section at the bottom of the page. Use the radio buttons to disable either or both of the options.

Disabling email and password login for your nation

In the rare event that you do not want anyone using email and password to log into your site, an admin or control panel user with "Manage authentication" permissions can disable this at the bottom of your nation's Settings > Login and Security page. Warning: This should only be done after you are certain that your nation admins are able to log into the nation through alternative methods such as Social login.
