Where to start

If you're using a third-party email provider, after you've connected your email address to a broadcaster you may want to forward your email to that broadcaster. These steps are done outside of your nation's control panel, as the easiest way to do this is to set up forwarding directly with your email provider.

If you are using a different service, you can contact your email provider for help forwarding your email. Typically, these instructions live within an online support center. Alternatively, you can forward email from your local computer. Using this method, mail will only be forwarded when your computer is on and the application is running.

You can also log a copy of outgoing emails from your external email provider to your nation by bcc'ing your broadcaster's forwarding address. This address is listed in bold in your broadcaster's Settings > Email screen. It is in the format of [email protected] (e.g. [email protected]). When sending from an external email provider, bcc'ing your broadcaster's forwarding address will only log contact in your nation if sending from the custom domain email address connected to your broadcaster.

Forwarding from Google Apps

1. Click the Settings icon in the top right of the screen.

2. Click the word Settings from the dropdown menu.

3. Go to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab and add your forwarding address. This address is listed in bold in your broadcaster's Settings > Email screen. It is in the format of [email protected] (e.g. [email protected])

4. Go to your broadcaster's dashboard. There will be an email with a confirmation code. Take this confirmation code and enter it in the field below the "Add a forwarding address" button in Google Apps.

5. Click the Save Changes button in Google Apps.

That's it! You've successfully forwarded incoming email to your broadcaster. The message in your broadcaster's email settings will not change.

Forwarding from Exchange

Your Exchange administrator will need to create a contact on the server for your broadcaster's email and then set up the autoforwarding for your account using either the Exchange Management Console (EMC) or shell commands. Microsoft Technet has instructions for configuring email forwarding. Note that after your email is successfully forwarded to your broadcaster, the message in your broadcaster's email settings will not change.

Forwarding from Mail for Mac

Remember that when forwarding from Mail for Mac, mail will only be forwarded when your computer is on and the application is running. Therefore, we recommend forwarding email directly from your email provider.

1. Go to Mail > Preferences > Rules and create a new rule named NationBuilder Autoforward.

The recipient contains field should be your custom domain email address.

Forward the message to your broadcaster's forwarding address. This address is listed in bold in your broadcaster's Settings > Email screen. It is in the format of [email protected] (e.g. [email protected])

2. Click the OK button.

If you want your old mail forwarded to your nation, click Apply when prompted. If you don't want your old mail forwarded, click Don't Apply.

That's it! You've successfully forwarded incoming email to your broadcaster. The message in your broadcaster's email settings will not change.

Forwarding mail from Outlook

To forward mail properly from Outlook, we suggest you set up a redirect so the email will retain the original sender and allow contacts to log appropriately in NationBuilder. We suggest this because the forward feature in Outlook makes mail come from the custom domain itself, instead of the original sender. This results in emails getting logged in the wrong profile.

To set up a redirect:

1. In a web browser, sign in to Outlook Web App using the URL provided by the person who manages email for your organization. Enter your user name and password, and then click Sign in.

2. At the top of the page, choose Outlook. Or, choose the app launcher > Outlook.

3. At the top of the page, select Settings > Options, and then select one of the following:

  • Organize email > Inbox rules > New OR

  • Mail > Automatic processing > Inbox rules > New  > Create a new rule for arriving messages

4. Type a name for your rule.

5. Under When the message arrives, select Apply to all messages.

6. Under Do the following, select Forward, redirect, or send > Redirect the message to.

7. Enter the email address you want in the To box, or choose it from your list of contacts.

8. Choose OK to save your selections, and OK or Save to create the rule.

That's it! You've successfully redirected incoming email to your broadcaster. The message in your broadcaster's email settings will not change.
